Welcome

    This web site has two purposes: first, to introduce four books I have written combining the genealogy of our family with a history of the times and places where they lived; and second, to make available the results of my genealogical studies over the past twenty five years. The titles of the books are:

        The Granthams, Seven Generations of American Frontiersmen
        A Smith Family Odyssey, a Southern Family and its Relations Through Six Generations
        The Seders, An American Family and its German Roots
        Four Families, Early Settlers of Western Virginia

    Each book traces the genealogy of the principal families involved, including collateral lines related by marriage. In each generation I have also briefly summarized the lives of siblings of the member of the principal line. But in addition to genealogy the books include material concerning the conditions each generation faced and how they lived their lives—the food they ate, the clothes they wore, the houses they inhabited, the political and religious issues they encountered, the migratory paths they followed and other relevant subjects. Each book includes maps and photographs, a table of contents, index and bibliography and is hard bound.
