Unlike the other three books described in this web site, each of which concentrates on a single family's history, Four Families, Early Settlers of Western Virginia, examines the genealogy and history of four families, as well as collateral lines. These families have two common elements: first, they represent the four major lines from which my wife, Marion Heltzel Seder, is descended; and second, all four families settled in or near the Shenandoah Valley of western Virginia in the eighteenth century.
The book is divided into three parts. Part I examines the genealogy and history of Marion Seder's maternal ancestors, the Riddlebergers and the Days; Part II follows the same pattern with regard to her paternal ancestors, the Heltzels and Barneys; and Part III (Chapter Sixteen) brings the four families together in the persons of Marion's father and mother, Virgil Barney Heltzel and Frances Elizabeth  Riddleberger. That chapter is summarized below. (Go to Chapter Sixteen)
For purposes of this web site, each of the four families will be treated separately in pages that can be accessed through the links in the menu bar above or in the index below. In those pages, the chapters relating to each individual family will be summarized, and links provided to that family's ancestor report and family tree.

Part III—Frances Riddleberger and Virgil Heltzel—and Marion

Chapter Sixteen is entitled "Frances Riddleberger and Virgil Heltzel—and Marion". It relates the childhood of both Frances and Virgil, their courtship and marriage and early years of married life when Virgil obtained advance degrees in English Literature and their child, Marion Frances Heltzel was born. Marion's childhood is also summarized, including the family's move to Evanston, Illinois, where Virgil served on the faculty of Northwestern University for thirty-five years. The chapter then relates Virgil and Frances' parting; Frances' marriage to Roy E. Washburn and their life together; and Virgil's subsequent marriage to Ruth Kopriva. Next follows a narrative of Marion's education, her marriage to Arthur R. Seder, Jr. and the couple's life together. It ends with a summary of the lives of their children, James A. Seder, Susan S. LaHoda and Elizabeth S. Whistler.
